Bo Burnham's 2021 Inside takes these questions of the ultimate nature of reality and our place in it to a whole new level -- many levels, actually. The creator of the film, Burnham, is front and center throughout, as is the process of the film's creation. Indeed, the film is about the film's creation. But it's also about the age of the internet, and the age of the internet, specifically, in the time of the COVID-19 quarantine.

 

The internet. One of the most foundational shifts, for better or worse, brought on by the internet is the ability for any of us to upload "content" into it. The highly undemocratic pyramid, whereby a small, select segment of the population creates film, and other media, for the rest of us to consume has been upended -- anyone with a youtube account and a camera on their phone can create content, and the metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical quandries this revolution has created occupy Burnham's art almost exclusively.
